5-Minute Story: Miguel’s Act of Courage

Here is a method I created to get my reluctant readers to read.

Step 1: Play the video given.

Step 2: Play the video and have students follow the story on their worksheet.

Step 3: Have students read the worksheet.

Step 4: Discuss and ask clarifying questions.

Step 5: Have students answer the questions given (individually or in groups).

5-minutes stories are supposed to be short and simple to read. Many of my students HATE reading because it is “boring” and they lack the stamina to focus on a text.

These activities are designed to build the confidence and stamina of struggling readers. The combination of using a video, and a text (with pictures) often provides the clarity needed for students to grasp the reading.
