I know–I know. Warm-up activities are supposed to align with the rest of the lesson. At least that is what I was taught.
Always following the “rules”–however, leads to dull lessons. Sometimes students need a jolt, and having students choose their warm-up activity is a great way of shaking things up.
With the following ebook, I have students choose their warm-up activity. It engages students because it is different. Students start chatting and debating with one another about the lesson.
“Bruh, let’s create a meme!”
“Nah, we did that last time.”
The ebook format also serves as a new stimulus. It’s different from a powerpoint presentation or textbook.
Remember–presentation is key when it comes to engaging students.
Once you hook them with a warm-up, you have positively and productively set the tone for the rest of the lesson.
After the random warm-up, I simply say,
“Now that you created some memes, let’s pivot to…”
Voila–you have an engaging lesson!
