Here’s a set of creative writing prompts that have worked well with my students.
The protocol I follow is this:
- Watch the video prompt.
- Read the story on the worksheet given. This is a great opportunity to go over vocabulary, and gauge if students understand the text.
- Replay the video.
- Check for understanding. Be sure students know that they need to write 150 words or more.
- Write.
My goal for these activities is to CELEBRATE ideas, and provide simple feedback on student writing. This typically consists of talking to individual students about punctuation, transition words, and more.
I keep feedback SIMPLE–one thing at a time. And I keep things mostly positive. At the start of the year I am trying to get students to see that “I am on their team.” This trust will allow me to demand more from them later in the year.
