Create a Nonprofit Organization

Have you heard of the Red Cross, Special Olympics, Boy Scouts of America, Amnesty International, or World Wildlife Fund?

All these organizations have one thing in common: They are non-profit organizations.

A non profit organization is a legal entity that runs sort of like a business. However, it’s goal is not to generate profit for its owners, but to create some kind of public good or service.

Your mission is to think about a good or service that could benefit your community and/or the world, and create a nonprofit organization that delivers that product. Maybe you could create a nonprofit focused on providing free dental services for those in need. Or maybe you could create an organization called Gamers for Good. Perhaps this nonprofit could raise money via video game tournaments to help fight homelessness in downtown Los Angeles.

Once you have identified a nonprofit idea to build upon, think of a name of your organization and write a 100 word or more mission statement. Your mission statement should provide details about who your nonprofit serves and why your nonprofit exists.

The purpose of this activity is not only to get you in the habit of identifying problems and seeking solutions, but for you to imagine the possibility of your ideas coming to life. So identify a problem, and create a nonprofit organization that addresses that problem. Then create a name for your nonprofit and write a mission statement. Who knows–maybe one day your idea could lead to helping millions of people, and make the world a better place.
