Writing challenges are a great way of shaking things up. They give students space to experiment with ideas, words, and literary devices.

Here is an assortment of challenges I use with my students.

Write a 100-Word Story Inspired by a Song:

I’m excited to share this creative writing task with you—it was a huge hit with my students! They absolutely loved it.

Here’s how it works: Choose three songs, and have your students write a creative story inspired by each one. It’s a fantastic way to spark their imagination and connect storytelling with music.

I plan to create a video for this activity soon, but I couldn’t wait to share it with you in the meantime.

Write a 300-Word Creative Story in Response to Two Songs!

In this activity, you will write a 300-word creative story inspired by two songs that your teacher will play.

Part One: The First Song

• Listen carefully to the first song and use it to inspire the beginning of your story.
• Your writing should cover the exposition, rising action, and climax of the story.
• Aim to capture the mood, tone, or themes of the song in approximately 150 words.

Part Two: The Second Song

• After finishing the first part, listen to the second song.
• Use it to guide the continuation of your story, focusing on the falling action and resolution.
• Like the first part, this section should also be 150 words.

Let the songs shape your creativity—whether they inspire the setting, characters, emotions, or events in your story.
