20-Word Summaries

When my students finish a writing assignment, I have them summarize their ideas in 20 words. I then have students share their 20-word summaries with a partner, and – if they choose – with the class. The purpose of this is to teach students how to condense their thinking. Learning how to identify the main points in one’s thoughts, and conveying those ideas via writing and speaking is essential for becoming an effective communicator.

I like watching CNN 10 once a week. I think it is a great tool to introduce students to new vocabulary and concepts. Here is the video explanation and worksheet I give my students.
