Many of my high school students lack “conceptual knowledge.” They have heard words such as racism, communism, capitalism, and socialism – but they don’t understand these terms in nuanced ways.
A nuanced thinker doesn’t understand a concept in terms of being “good” or “bad.” Instead, when a person truly grasps or understands a topic, they begin seeing the complexity of concepts. They start saying things such as “it depends,” and they start seeing the limitation of their knowledge.
For the following task, students need to research an “-ism” of interest. The goal is for students to become more familiar with their chosen “-ism” by documenting their learning journey.
