Silent Debate (Argumentative Writing Activity)

For this task, you’re going to have an argument with a classmate — but there’s a twist: you won’t be speaking at all. Instead, you will argue on paper. You’ll share your ideas, respond to your partner, and try to convince them of your point of view, all through writing.

The purpose of this task is to help you practice critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. By arguing on paper, you’ll learn how to express your opinions clearly, respond to others’ ideas, and defend your point of view—all without speaking.

Here are some possible topics for you and your classmate to argue about:

  • Should students have homework?
  • Is it better to have year-round school or a long summer break?
  • Should schools have uniforms?
  • Is it fair to ban junk food in schools?
  • Should students be allowed to have phones in class?
  • Is playing video games good or bad for you?
  • Should schools start later in the morning?
  • Should animals be kept in zoos?
  • Is social media harmful to kids?
  • Are professional athletes paid too much?
  • Should schools get rid of grades?
  • Should there be limits on screen time for kids?
  • Is it better to read a book or watch the movie version?

Once again, your mission is to argue with a classmate on paper. Share your ideas, respond to your partner, and try to convince them of your point of view—all through writing.
