Here’s a set of creative writing prompts that have worked well with my students.

The protocol I follow is this:

  1. Watch the video prompt.
  2. Read the story on the worksheet given. This is a great opportunity to go over vocabulary, and gauge if students understand the text.
  3. Replay the video.
  4. Check for understanding. Be sure students know that they need to write 150 words or more.
  5. Write.

My goal for these activities is to CELEBRATE ideas, and provide simple feedback on student writing. This typically consists of talking to individual students about punctuation, transition words, and more.

I keep feedback SIMPLE–one thing at a time. And I keep things mostly positive. At the start of the year I am trying to get students to see that “I am on their team.” This trust will allow me to demand more from them later in the year.
