Summarize a Game or Match (Extra Credit)

Many teachers dislike giving extra credit.

I get it.

I don’t have a strong opinion on the matter.

However, extra credit has worked well with my current students. I think this is because I use extra credit as an opportunity for students to “show off” their knowledge and passions.

My goal is to make extra credit enticing.

I want students to watch a football game and think – “Bruh, I could be getting extra credit for this.”

With fall sports coming, here is an extra credit opportunity for students to bring their sports knowledge to the classroom.

Students need to write a 50-word or more summary for each half. Then they need to condense the game to one 20-word summary.

With extra credit, I never just collect the assignment. Oh, no. I talk about what the student wrote, and give feedback on their 20-word summary.

Boom. Mission accomplished.

The student receives extra credit, and I get the chance to provide feedback on their writing.

It’s a win-win situation.
