Students need space to generate ideas. In fact, It is only when students learn how to uncover their unique and personal perspectives that I can begin to develop them as writers.
The following task I plan on using randomly (yes, you heard that right). Not all of my lessons perfectly glide into each other. Sometimes my students walk into my class and I say, “Today we are going to work on ideas–so bring me fresh, innovative, and interesting ideas.”
That’s it. One goal. Give me your ideas.
Here is the activity:
Greetings, Mr. Tolentino! I’ve been teaching 7th and 8th grade math and/or science at a small, rural high school for 20 years. Seven years ago, I was transferred to an elementary school to teach 6th grade math, science, and social studies. I put my whole heart into doing the very best I could for my students. Last week, I was told that I will be teaching English and writing as well as the other three subjects. I have never taught them in 28 years. TDA, 6+ 1, RACE, etc are all foreign to me. This year, we welcome in all new standards for ELA, science and social studies. 🤦🏾♀️ The textbook is useless, and there are no resources other than a pacing guide. In addition, I am going through formal evaluation for my recertification. My year one teaching anxiety became overwhelming as I try to find some understanding of this new, uncharted territory. TPT didn’t give me everything I needed to prepare for it. Then, I came across your post in one of the Middle School ELA groups. My entire weekend was spent binge watching your videos and gaining clarity in your resources on your website. YOU SAVED ME!!! I was ready to fall on my knees and cry myself to sleep (or take a stiff drink)😉. I was in a dark tunnel and you have provided me with a glimmer of hope. For that, I am extremely grateful for you and your generosity. There are only two teachers for the entire 6th grade at my school. Both of us are math teachers and will be self contained for the first time this yeae. Hence, I have no one to assist with the planning or gathering ideas before we return on this Monday. Thank you for everything you have shared for writing. You are truly a blessing and have given my 29th year a fresh start. I just wish you taught English as well.😁 Continue to be blessed and a blessing to others.🙌🏾
Thanks for the kind words, Theresa. I wish you the best this year. You got this!
